In late July 2026, the Egyptian cabinet set several paid public holidays, including the 23 July Revolution and Armed Forces Day. Following the sighting of the crescent moon for Rabi' al-Awwal, the Prophet Muhammad's birthday (Mawlid al-Nabi) was expected to fall on Tuesday, 25 August 2026. Leading up to the observance, the Endowments Directorate in Qena launched celebratory events at the Sidi Abdel Rahim al-Qanai Mosque, featuring religious lectures on the Prophet's biography and ethics. Dar al-Ifta al-Missriyyah noted that the Prophet commemorated his birth by fasting on Mondays, stating, ‘That is a day on which I was born.’ The Fatwa House also encouraged the exchange of sweets to promote joy among families. To create consecutive days off, Prime Minister Mostafa Madbouly issued a decree postponing the official paid holiday from the religious date to Thursday, 27 August 2026. This shift applies to both the public and private sectors. In conjunction with the holiday, the Ministry of Labor is preparing to distribute a 1,500 Egyptian pound grant to registered irregular workers, with payments expected to begin shortly. As the religious date arrived on 25 August, celebrations became widespread. In Alexandria, residents maintained traditional customs such as purchasing Mawlid sweets and distributing banana-flavored sharbat. Cultural events were also held at the Cairo University interchange station, featuring religious chanting performances by individuals with special needs through a collaboration between the Ministries of Transport and Culture. Various leaders, including defense officials and governors from Port Said and New Valley, issued congratulatory messages to President Abdel Fattah el-Sisi, emphasizing values of peace, mercy, and national unity. Expanding the scope of the observance, Minister of Endowments Dr. Osama al-Azhari announced the release of a concise book regarding the Prophet’s characteristics, translated into twenty languages including English, Spanish, German, Chinese, and French.
