Egypt aquatic resource and aquaculture regulation

Overview

Egypt has implemented new environmental and trade regulations concerning its aquatic resources. Initially, the Ministry of Local Development and Environment introduced measures to protect migratory birds by regulating fishing activities and enforcing bans on hunting within natural protectorates. This included the creation of a unified database for tracking violations and an enforcement campaign in the Wadi El Rayan Protectorate that recorded 80 violations.

Following these regulatory efforts, Egypt secured authorization to export aquaculture products, such as farmed finfish and crustaceans, to all 27 European Union member states. This access was granted via Implementing Regulation 2026/2228, which recognizes Egypt’s ability to meet EU standards regarding contaminants and chemical residues. The Ministry of Investment and Foreign Trade noted that this achievement resulted from aligning national monitoring systems and regulatory frameworks with European requirements.
