Egypt’s Minister of Local Development and Environment, Manal Awad, has been overseeing various environmental, urban, and regulatory initiatives. In late August, efforts focused on sustainable resource use and infrastructure modernization. This included discussions at the Egyptian Environmental Affairs Agency regarding private sector investment in natural protectorates and eco-tourism. Urban projects were also highlighted, such as the Attaba Market development in Cairo and road upgrades in Giza, where the Minister mandated that any trees removed for utility work must be replaced with double the original amount. By mid-September, the focus shifted toward regulatory enforcement and field inspections across several Cairo districts, including Heliopolis and Nasr City. These inspections, conducted by the Higher Committee for Public Shop Licensing and the Ministry’s Internal Audit and Governance Department, targeted street encroachments and licensing violations. The campaigns resulted in the removal of 167 cases of illegal obstructions and the closure of 97 non-compliant commercial facilities. Minister Awad recently reviewed these inspection reports, which covered Mokattam, East and West Nasr City, Heliopolis, and El Nozha. The oversight also evaluated the efficiency of technological centers and the processing of citizen requests. In Dakahlia Governorate, the Minister’s focus expanded to public services and waste management. Inspections in Mansoura included the rollout of ten tricycles for residential waste collection and the ‘Mansoura Transport’ VIP public transportation service, an initiative observed by regional governors and representatives from the European Union and the European Bank for Reconstruction and Development. Additionally, Awad conducted unannounced visits to environmental awareness centers in Ezbet al-Walda and al-Maasara, and inspected the Ministry’s central pollutant analysis laboratory and logistics warehouse in Maadi. In late September, urban maintenance efforts continued in Heliopolis, where authorities used heavy equipment to relocate a large Delonix regia tree after it fell onto a building, aiming to preserve it for replanting.
