Egypt regional electricity interconnection efforts

Overview

Egypt is advancing several initiatives to establish itself as a regional energy hub through large-scale electrical interconnection projects.

In early September 2026, Egypt and Italy moved to accelerate a 3,000 MW electricity interconnection project. Discussions between energy ministers focused on the technical, environmental, and financial studies necessary to link African and European power grids. This cooperation aligns with Egypt’s goal to reach a 45% renewable energy share in its national mix by 2028.

By late September 2026, Egypt announced the completion of its side of an electrical interconnection project with Saudi Arabia. This $1.8 billion project involves approximately 1,320 to 1,350 kilometers of infrastructure, including the 500 kV Badr transformer station and transmission lines crossing the Suez Canal. The project, which is entering a trial operation phase, is designed to facilitate the exchange of up to 3,000 megawatts of electricity to enhance grid stability and load management.
