Egypt continues to develop the Suez Canal Economic Zone (SCIZ) as a logistics and industrial hub. In early June June, the government announced a plan to build a global logistics distribution centre and highlighted a $300 million wind‑turbine component factory by China’s Sany Group. At the same time, arrears to international oil firms were cut from $6.1 billion to $440 million, with a pledge to clear the remainder by 10 June, boosting confidence in energy projects. Container traffic through the canal remained depressed in May 2024, with a 76 % 76% drop in ship calls, but oil‑tanker movements rose sharply in April 2024, up 28 % 28% year‑on‑year, as disruptions in the Strait of Hormuz forced producers to reroute via the Red Sea. Overall vessel movements grew 14 % 14% YoY, lifting monthly canal revenue to $419 million. Following a security reassessment, Maersk and Hapag‑Lloyd announced the gradual re‑introduction of their AE15 service through the canal, with the 19,000‑TEU 19,000-TEU Majestic Maersk cutting westbound transit by about seven days and eastbound by up to two weeks. The carriers retain the option to divert to the Cape of Good Hope if conditions deteriorate. The Suez Canal Authority raised temporary surcharges in July (37 % (37% for crude tankers, 12 % 12% for containerships) and MSC added a peak‑season fee of up to $3,000 per container for West‑African shipments. Despite higher fees, canal revenues continued to climb, reaching $1.26 billion in Q2 2026 – a 13 % 13% quarterly increase – and foreign‑currency earnings from transit rose 23 % 23% to $4.6 billion in FY 2025/26. The SCIZ reported record FY 2025/26 revenue of EGP 15.9 billion, a 37 % 37% YoY gain, with cargo handled more than doubling to 108.7 million tonnes and new industrial‑zone contracts worth $7.26 billion signed.
