Egypt and Turkey have moved to deepen bilateral relations through both economic and diplomatic channels. Initial discussions between agricultural ministers focused on enhancing trade, specifically regarding fertilizer, plant nutrition, and joint investments to support production supplies. These talks noted a significant trade balance and highlighted growing Egyptian agricultural exports to Turkey. Following these sectoral discussions, high-level diplomatic meetings between the foreign ministers in El Alameyn expanded the scope of cooperation to regional security. The two nations addressed the Palestinian cause, humanitarian aid for Gaza, and the sovereignty of Libya and Sudan. Diplomatic efforts also included discussions regarding Egypt’s potential entry into the Mecca Alliance to promote regional self-management of conflicts. In a recent meeting in El Alameyn, Turkish Foreign Minister Hakan Fidan and Egyptian Foreign Minister Badr Abdelatty formalized these efforts by signing three cooperation documents. These agreements cover strategic planning, amendments to their Free Trade Agreement to boost trade, and enhanced transport connectivity between Turkey and African coastal nations. The leaders established a target to increase bilateral trade volume to $15 billion. Regarding the conflict in Gaza, Fidan criticized Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu’s policies, stating they ‘trample on human dignity.’ He noted that Turkey and Egypt have agreed to take ‘more serious measures’ and are coordinating on a peace plan and humanitarian aid. Both ministers reaffirmed their support for the sovereignty and territorial integrity of Libya and Sudan, while Fidan reiterated the importance of the Mecca Defense Pact for regional security. During the second meeting of the Turkey-Egypt Joint Planning Group in El Alameyn, the ministers furthered these commitments. Fidan warned that if Israel fails to commit to the peace process, Turkey, Egypt, and Qatar might take ‘radical joint actions.’
