Egypt-West African bilateral diplomatic engagements
Overview
During the eighth mid-year coordination meeting of the African Union and the summit of the African Union Development Agency, Egyptian President Abdel Fattah el-Sisi engaged in bilateral meetings with West African leaders to strengthen regional ties.
In a meeting with Senegalese President Bassirou Diomaye Faye, discussions focused on mobilizing continental resources for development projects to combat poverty and youth unemployment. President el-Sisi expressed Egypt’s readiness to support Senegal’s ‘Five-Year Plan’ and ‘Senegal Vision 2050’ by transferring expertise in energy, agriculture, irrigation, and infrastructure. The leaders also addressed regional stability and the Nile River issue.
Subsequently, President el-Sisi met with Ghanaian President John Dramani Mahama to reaffirm commitments to cooperation in trade, security, and healthcare. The leaders discussed streamlining the registration of Egyptian medical products in Ghana and expanding collaboration with Egypt’s defence industry regarding counter-terrorism and intelligence sharing. The meeting also touched upon pan-Africanism and Egypt’s support for Ghana’s United Nations resolution regarding reparations for colonialism and slavery.
