Egypt is experiencing price increases across various consumer sectors, including electronics and food commodities. In the technology market, smartphone prices manufactured locally have surged since the beginning of 2026. Mid-range models have seen increases of up to 78.1%, while entry-level devices rose by 63.6%. Major brands such as Samsung, Xiaomi, Oppo, and Realme have all implemented hikes. Industry officials attribute these rises to operating costs increasing by more than 35%, driven by higher component and shipping costs, raw material import expenses, the depreciation of the Egyptian pound, and geopolitical tensions affecting maritime navigation. Food commodity prices continue to show volatility. Data from the Central Agency for Public Mobilisation and Statistics (CAPMAS) for September 2026 indicated varying annual urban inflation reports of 13.9% and 12.8%. Monthly inflation accelerated, driven largely by a 15.1% rise in vegetable prices. While white onions and potatoes saw increases, beans and cucumbers experienced decreases. Other increases were noted in fruit (2.6%), meat and poultry (2.5%), and fish and seafood (1.2%). On an annual basis, housing and utilities rose by 29.6%, while transport costs increased by 21.3%. These shifts follow the Central Bank of Egypt’s decision to maintain key interest rates in late September. The Ministry of Supply and Internal Trade continues to monitor markets to ensure adherence to official weights and prices. Through increased inspection campaigns by supply directorates, the Ministry is enforcing strict controls for tourist bread and fino bread to protect consumers from price gouging or weight reductions.
