EHang Holdings Ltd. is expanding the commercial footprint of its autonomous electric vertical takeoff and landing (eVTOL) aircraft. Having secured necessary Chinese certifications for its EH216-S model, the company has seen operators obtain Air Operator Certificates for commercial passenger flights. International expansion is progressing through successful test flights in Abu Dhabi and the first autonomous passenger flight in Astana, Kazakhstan, where a regulatory framework for vertiports has been established. Sri Lanka has emerged as the inaugural market for EHang’s newly launched “Global Fast Track Program.” This structured framework is designed to accelerate international commercial roll-outs by providing a replicable, four-phase roadmap based on EHang’s existing certifications. Rather than merely acquiring hardware, Sri Lanka is importing a complete certification framework to authorize and oversee unmanned passenger aerial vehicles. The Civil Aviation Authority of Sri Lanka (CAASL) has accepted proposals to create an eVTOL sandbox, targeting commercialization within four months, pending regulatory, technical, and safety assessments. Proposed uses include tourism, emergency response, and maritime operations, such as transport between Bandaranaike International Airport and Colombo. EHang representatives suggested that a trip from the airport to a Colombo hotel could potentially cost between US$20 and US$30. Successful implementation requires coordination between several state institutions, including the Ministry of Defence, the Sri Lanka Air Force, and the Telecommunications Regulatory Commission, to address aviation safety, air traffic management, cybersecurity, and data protection. In a related development, EHang’s Hong Kong, the EH216-S has successfully completed its first public flight at demonstration flight, which carried a robot passenger along a preset route. This was a collaborative effort involving EHang, Kwoon Chung Bus Group, and Hong Kong Cyberport. This flight is part Science and Technology Parks. Since mid-August, the aircraft has completed over ten test flights totaling more than 10 hours of operation without reported incidents. To support the HKSAR Government’s Low-Altitude Economy ‘Regulatory Sandbox X’ Trial Project, which aims development of the low-altitude economy, the Hong Kong government is working on new civil aviation legislation specifically for unmanned aircraft weighing over 150 kg.
