Solar Team Eindhoven’s Stella Juva, a solar‑powered ambulance prototype built by 23 engineering students from the Technical University of Eindhoven, continues to move toward real‑world testing. The vehicle combines rooftop photovoltaic panels with a 50 kWh battery that drives an electric motor and powers medical equipment such as an AED, a portable X‑ray unit and vaccine‑cold storage. In optimal sunlight it can travel up to 715 km and reach speeds of about 120 km/h, allowing it to function as a self‑contained mobile clinic in remote, off‑grid areas. In July 2026 the team publicly unveiled Stella Juva, describing it as the world’s first ambulance that runs entirely on solar energy while powering all onboard medical devices. In August 2026, the vehicle commenced field trials in Kenya in collaboration with Amref Health Africa and solar technology company AIKO. By late August 2026, the team successfully completed field tests in Kenya, which included driving over 800 kilometers (approximately 500 miles) to evaluate off-road capabilities across difficult, dusty, and potholed terrain. The testing, conducted in partnership with Amref Health Africa, focused on improving maternal and child health by reaching locations such as a clinic in the Narok region that lacks electricity. To facilitate these trials, Cargolux provided free transportation of the vehicle from Luxembourg to Nairobi. During the practical field tests in the Narok region, the team encountered a broken steering component due to the rugged terrain; however, the part was replaced within thirty minutes, allowing the mission to continue. Developers confirmed that the solar panels generate more energy than the onboard medical tools consume, including X-ray machines, ultrasound scanners, and tuberculosis testing kits. The vehicle is equipped with high-efficiency ABC solar cells and features expandable side panels to increase charging capacity when stationary. Testing confirmed that the solar panels can generate enough energy while the vehicle is parked to power all onboard medical equipment simultaneously, enabling autonomous operation even at night or during cloudy weather. When stationary, these additional side panels also provide shade for patients.
