Ekurhuleni municipality independent power procurement
Overview
The City of Ekurhuleni has been authorized to procure up to 2,400MW of new generation capacity from Independent Power Producers (IPPs) under a Ministerial Determination. This initiative aims to increase energy security and reduce dependence on the national utility, Eskom, through a diverse energy mix including solar photovoltaic, natural gas, waste-to-energy, and other innovative technologies.
Following this authorization, the municipality has commenced practical implementation with the launch of a 25-megawatt solar photovoltaic project including energy storage at the Fresh Produce Market in Springs. Developed by BluEnergy and IBS Crafts with an investment of 360 million rands, this project is expected to produce approximately 40 GWh per year, enough to power roughly 6,000 households via a twenty-year supply contract.
