Following his unmasking as El Grande Americano in May, Chad Gable transitioned from a tag-team specialist to a prominent singles contender. In mid-July 2026, Gable secured a number-one-contender spot by winning a gauntlet match on WWE Raw. On August 2, 2026, at SummerSlam, Gable defeated Penta Zero Miedo to win the Intercontinental Championship. Gable’s reign continued with successful defenses against Rey Mysterio and Dragon Lee. In early September, Lee earned a title shot by defeating Ethan Page in a match where Page utilized underhanded tactics. Gable subsequently defended the title against Lee in Mexico City, later praising the local audience as some of the most ‘welcoming and forgiving people’ he has encountered. In October, Gable faced Rey Fenix on WWE Raw in Bossier City, securing a victory via ankle lock. Following the bout, Fenix acknowledged Gable as the better wrestler and expressed interest in a future ‘Championship vs. Championship’ match, while Gable noted that Fenix ‘over-delivered’ during their fight. On October 20, 2026, Gable successfully defended the championship again in a triple threat match against Rey Mysterio and Dragon Lee, winning via a roll-up on Mysterio. The post-match period was marked by chaos when Ethan Page attacked both Gable and Mysterio, while Big Cass appeared to attack Dragon Lee.
