Authorities in Portugal have launched investigations into multiple facilities following reports of mismanagement and maltreatment of elderly residents. In Viana do Castelo, the Social Security Institute began inspecting the Centro Social Paroquial de Barroselas. The investigation follows allegations from a former supervisory board president regarding financial irregularities, including the claim that over 833,000 euros were consumed since 2018 and an apartment was sold below market value. The complaint also cites labor harassment and inadequate care, such as residents allegedly being served only soup for meals. Separately, in Sintra, police and health officials uncovered an unlicensed senior residence in Belas. Investigators reported finding An inspection by the Polícia de Segurança Pública (PSP) and local entities revealed residents were being isolated and immobilized with sheets, improper medication storage in chairs using sheets to restrict movement, which management reportedly justified as “security measures.” Investigators noted severe safety concerns, including bedroom doors lacking handles on either side, requiring staff to use a removable device to open them, raising suspicions of nighttime confinement. The facility also exhibited grave failures in medical care and hygiene; authorities discovered medications stored in food refrigerators, refrigerators and a lack noted the absence of trained a nursing station and trained staff. The case has been referred to the Public Ministry. Ministério Público for further investigation. These findings coincide with a broader police operation, ‘Solidarity Has No Age’, which identified hundreds of elderly citizens in high-risk situations across urban centers.
