Elderly victims of telephone-based financial fraud
Overview
Recent reports highlight significant financial fraud targeting elderly individuals through telephone-based deception.
In one instance, a 74-year-old woman in Orahovica lost over 39,000 euros to a commodity trading scam. A perpetrator posing as a London-based broker used a fraudulent online platform to display fictitious profits from oil, gold, and aluminum trades to encourage multiple payments.
In a separate incident in Villa Gesell, an 80-year-old woman was defrauded of approximately 80,000 USD. A scammer impersonated a relative, claiming a presidential announcement would invalidate unregistered currency, and sent an individual to collect the cash in person. Local authorities are investigating both cases.
