In August 2026, Rio de Janeiro implemented several initiatives focused on the city’s elderly population. Initially, the Municipal Health Secretariat expanded COVID-19 vaccination eligibility for the LP. 8.1 strain to include seniors aged 60 and older, following a new supply of doses from the Ministry of Health. This program also continued to serve pregnant women, immunocompromised individuals, and people with permanent disabilities through various primary care and specialized centers. Later in the month, the Municipal Secretariat of Healthy Aging and Quality of Life (SEMESQV) launched the ‘Rio que Cuida: Um Dia Especial para a Pessoa Idosa’ social initiative. The first edition was held at the Maria Haydée Social Center in Gávea, bringing together participants from various community centers, such as the Bibi Franklin Leal center, to promote social integration and well-being. The program provided health screenings, including glucose testing, blood pressure monitoring, and clinical exams, alongside wellness activities like massage, physiotherapy, Tai Chi Chuan, ballroom dancing, and stretching. It also offered beauty services such as hair cutting and makeup. The city plans to expand the initiative to four other locations, with the next edition scheduled for September 1st at the Carmen Miranda Social Center in Penha, followed by events at the Chacrinha, Lolita Rodrigues, and Padre Velloso units. In addition to the ‘Rio que Cuida’ project, the Albert Schweitzer Municipal Hospital in Realengo launched a blood donation campaign in partnership with Hemorio to replenish local blood banks for emergency procedures and surgeries.
