Major automotive manufacturers are advancing the electrification of the heavy-duty truck market through new model launches and localized production strategies. BYD has introduced its ETT 44 heavy-duty tractor for the European market, a 4x2 model designed for combinations up to 44 tonnes. The vehicle features an 851V architecture and a 651 kWh Blade Battery, providing a maximum range of 600 km. It supports megawatt charging, capable of reaching a 20% to 80% charge in approximately 20 minutes. Notably, the ETT 44 is the first long-haul electric truck to receive a Euro NCAP safety rating. At the IAA Transportation trade fair in Hanover, BYD announced an aggressive expansion strategy to mitigate potential trade tariffs and shorten supply chains. Executive vice president Stella Li stated that the company aims to become a “European company” by producing all vehicles sold in the region locally. This includes plans for full-scale local manufacturing and manufacturing, leveraging its existing presence in Szeged, Hungary. To support fleet operators, BYD is developing an integrated ecosystem including financing, solar-powered charging, and mobile roadside assistance. The Volvo FH Aero Electric offers configurations with ranges up to 700 km and utilizes Megawatt Charging System (MCS) technology. Volvo is also producing electric combinations for heavy loads of up to 80 tonnes, with production centered in Sweden and Belgium. Expanding on these developments, MAN has introduced the eTGX, a heavy-duty electric tractor with a claimed range of up to 720 km. Both Volvo and MAN are prioritizing high-speed charging via the MCS to support long-distance logistics.
