The wave of traffic accidents that began in early June continued through early August 2026. After the series of motorcycle, scooter and car‑van crashes reported up to 27 July, further fatalities were recorded on that day: 27‑year‑old motorcyclist Thomas Modesti was killed in Rosà, Veneto, when his bike struck a car, and 66‑year‑old American rider Dominic Tortorici died in a solo crash in Ribera, Sicily. On 2 August, a multi‑vehicle collision on state road 79 (the Terni‑Rieti highway) near Colli sul Velino involved a bus, a camper and several cars, killing five and injuring at least 27. Updated reports later confirmed six deaths – the two bus drivers, two passengers and two occupants of the camper – and the same number of injured. The crash occurred during heavy rain and strong winds that knocked trees onto the roadway, prompting the closure of the highway in both directions, long traffic queues and diversions. Emergency services—including fire brigades, ambulances, medical‑rescue helicopters and the 118 system—responded; three victims were air‑lifted in red‑code while dozens more received yellow or green‑code care. Police and traffic investigators are conducting a detailed inquiry into the sequence of impacts and any contributing factors. These incidents sustain concerns over road safety, emergency‑response capacity and the impact of traffic‑management measures across Italy.
