Electric scooter safety concerns in Norway

As the school year approaches in Norway, road safety organizations and police have issued warnings regarding electric scooter safety and regulation compliance.

The Norwegian Automobile Federation (NAF) initially urged parents to inspect vehicles for compliance with speed limits and age requirements, noting that many scooters are sold with illegal speed capabilities. NAF also highlighted a significant insurance gap, stating that “four out of five private electric scooters are reportedly uninsured,” which leaves owners or parents financially liable for accidents.

Following these concerns, Norwegian police and road safety authorities emphasized the risks of illegal modifications, such as using mobile apps or hardware changes to increase speed. Police traffic coordinator Torstein Vestby warned that illegally modified or defective scooters will be confiscated on the spot, and users over 15 may face criminal charges. Authorities continue to remind the public that riders must be at least 12 years old and that helmets are mandatory for those under 15.
