Electric vehicle battery supply chain developments
Overview
Developments in the electric vehicle battery supply chain show a focus on securing raw materials and recycling capabilities in Europe and North America.
In Germany, the recycling firm Cylib acquired a former battery-recycling plant in Wernberg-Köblitz. The site, previously idle following the insolvency of Roth International, is intended to be modernized to process up to 10,000 tonnes of spent electric-vehicle batteries annually by 2027. This acquisition allows Cylib to integrate upstream pre-processing into its existing hydrometallurgy operations.
In North America, Electra Battery Materials has secured its cobalt supply through 2031 to support a refinery project in Ontario, Canada. Through an agreement with Glencore AG, the company has secured approximately 10,000 metric tonnes of cobalt feedstock to cover the commissioning and ramp-up of the facility through 2027. Additionally, Electra has established a term sheet with LG Energy Solution to commit a significant portion of the refinery’s cobalt sulfate output through 2029.
