Electric vehicle consumer interest and adoption trends

Overview

Consumer interest in electric vehicles (EVs) is showing upward trends across Australia, the United States, and Canada, though infrastructure and availability remain significant hurdles.

In Australia and the United States, studies indicate rising sentiment. In Australia, 67 per cent of surveyed drivers are more likely to consider an EV than the previous year, driven by fuel costs and improved range, though the fleet is expanding faster than the public charging network. In the U.S., 53 per cent of drivers report increased openness to EVs, with nearly 80 per cent of current owners noting that gas prices influence their interest.

In Canada, 48 per cent of consumers are inclined to purchase an EV next, but adoption is tempered by specific market gaps. Potential buyers expressed interest in more Chinese-made models and a greater variety of electric pickup trucks. While Canada expanded its charging network during the third quarter of 2026, upfront purchase price remains the primary obstacle for consumers.
