Electric vehicle motion sickness research
Overview
Research indicates that electric vehicles (EVs) may increase the risk and severity of motion sickness, or kinetosis, due to a ‘neural mismatch’ between sensory inputs. This occurs when the brain receives conflicting information from the inner ear and the eyes.
Experts note that the quietness of electric motors removes the auditory and tactile cues used to anticipate acceleration, while regenerative braking and rapid accelerator responses can cause sudden speed changes. Recent observations suggest that the intensity of kinetosis in battery electric vehicles (BEVs) may be approximately 10% to 30% higher than in internal combustion engine vehicles because of this lack of sensory feedback.
Specific contributors to nausea include regenerative braking, where the motor acts as a generator to slow the vehicle and recharge the battery upon accelerator release, potentially causing sudden deceleration. The absence of traditional engine noise and vibrations may also create a sensation of swaying.
To mitigate these effects, specialists recommend that passengers avoid reading or using mobile devices, instead looking through the front windshield or at a distant point to align vision with the vehicle’s movement. Sitting in the front passenger seat is also suggested as a preventative measure.

[TECHNOLOGY] 7 sourcesElectric vehicles: Motion sickness causes and ownership considerations
Experts link EV motion sickness to regenerative braking and lack of engine vibration, while noting that EV economic benefits depend on home charging access and driving patterns.
-
[HEALTH] 2 sourcesElectric vehicles may increase motion sickness severity
Motion sickness, or kinetosis, may be more intense in electric vehicles because the lack of engine noise and vibration prevents the brain from anticipating movement.

Electric vehicles may increase motion sickness due to their quiet motors, rapid acceleration, and regenerative braking, which can cause a sensory mismatch between the eyes and the inner ear.
