Electricity access and reliability in the Amazon

Overview

The Amazon region faces significant challenges regarding electrical stability and access. In Manaus, a shutdown at the Cachoeira Grande substation, reportedly caused by a lightning strike hitting a distribution line, led to widespread power outages across several neighborhoods. This incident involved the automatic shutdown of the Tucunaré thermoelectric plant and marked the fourth major load interruption in the Amazonas electrical system since August.

Beyond urban disruptions, approximately 1.5 million Brazilians in the Legal Amazon lack access to public electricity services. In remote communities like Anã, residents depend on diesel generators that provide only three to four hours of electricity per night. This scarcity impacts healthcare, education, and food security, as the lack of reliable refrigeration forces a reliance on processed or salted foods. The National Electric Energy Agency (Aneel) is currently engaging with researchers and civil society to address the regulatory and technical hurdles of providing power to these isolated areas.
