Electronic Arts (EA) has shut down the Canadian-based developer BioWare, ending approximately 30 years of operations. The decision includes the cancellation of the upcoming fifth Mass Effect title, identified as ‘Mass Effect: Universe’, which was in early development. The closure is part of a broader restructuring that resulted in roughly 400 global layoffs, representing about 3% of EA’s workforce, including approximately 50 at BioWare. This shutdown follows a major corporate transition in which EA was taken private in a $55 billion deal. The company is now owned by a consortium including Saudi Arabia’s Public Investment Fund, Silver Lake, and Affinity Partners. While the company no longer answers to public shareholders, it faces approximately $20 billion in debt financing. The BioWare closure brings the total number of acquired studios shut down by EA to 20 over its nearly 40-year history. In response, the ‘#SaveMassEffect’ movement has gained significant momentum. A Change.org petition, created by Joe Smith, has surpassed 220,000 signatures, calling for EA to either fund the franchise’s continued development or to license the intellectual property to another studio. The movement has received high-profile support from voice actors Jennifer Hale and Mark Meer, as well as the ‘Destiny’ gaming community. To further draw attention to the cause, protesters have expanded their efforts into the physical world, including purchasing a billboard in New York City’s Times Square. New details regarding the canceled ‘Mass Effect: Universe’ suggest the game was set 600 years after the Reaper War. The project reportedly featured a customizable N7 agent with espionage and hacking capabilities, offering mission freedom similar to the ‘Hitman’ series. It also reportedly aimed to incorporate player choices from the original trilogy to create distinct timelines.
