Elephant calf rescue from Teesta River

Overview

A newborn elephant calf was rescued from the Teesta River in West Bengal after being swept away by strong currents following water releases from the Gajoldoba barrage.

The rescue involved coordination between local residents and wildlife officials. A sluice gate operator spotted the calf and raised gates to prevent it from hitting concrete structures, while local fishermen used small boats to track the animal for several miles downstream.

After being retrieved from the water, the calf was handed over to the Baikunthapur Forest Division. Forest officials successfully reunited the calf with its mother, ensuring the animal was safe and able to nurse.
