Since late June, at least 18 to 20 elephants have died in Kenya’s Amboseli-Kimana ecosystem, with fatalities primarily affecting adult females and their calves. The animals have reportedly exhibited symptoms such as partial paralysis. Authorities, including the Kenya Wildlife Service and the University of Nairobi, have proposed cyanide poisoning from pesticides used on local crops as the probable cause. This theory is supported by laboratory analyses finding traces of cyanide and sprayed tomato remains in the stomachs of the deceased elephants. However, this conclusion is contested by local Maasai communities and farmers, who argue that humans and livestock consume the same produce without ill effects, suggesting instead that an unknown disease may be responsible. A multi-agency inquiry involving security agencies and scientific institutions has led to the arrest of four suspects of interest.
