Željko Obradović returns to Belgrade with Panathinaikos

Josep Maria Iskjerdo, a long-time assistant to Željko Obradović, has provided context regarding Obradović’s departure from the Partizan basketball club. Iskjerdo indicated that while players were failing to follow tactical instructions, the primary driver for the exit was Obradović’s sense of integrity and personal responsibility for the team's performance, as the coaching staff had brought the players to the club.

Following his departure from Belgrade, Obradović signed with Panathinaikos, with Iskjerdo joining him. On October 13, 2026, Obradović returned to Belgrade as Panathinaikos defeated Partizan 72-55 in a EuroLeague matchup at the Belgrade Arena. The victory allowed Panathinaikos to maintain a perfect 5-0 record for the season and marked their first away win of the year, driven largely by a strong defensive performance.

Despite the competitive setting, Obradović received a standing ovation from the 20,073 fans in attendance. He described his connection to the Serbian club as ‘unbreakable’ and expressed gratitude for the warm reception. Addressing his previous tenure, he stated he has no desire to revisit the past and expressed hope that Partizan becomes a permanent member of the EuroLeague. He also noted that he declined a gift prepared by the club, stating that Partizan had already given him everything.
