Musician Elvis Costello has released the ‘My Aim Is True (49th Anniversary Edition)’, a five-CD collection commemorating his 1977 debut album. The set includes 104 tracks, featuring 52 previously unreleased recordings, demos, and outtakes, all newly remastered from the original 1977 analog master tapes. The collection is organized into five discs that discs—‘My Aim Is True’, ‘The Blue Print’, ‘The Stranger In The House’, ‘Becoming The Attractions’, and ‘Covered In Clover’—which trace Costello’s musical evolution, evolution from his early days as Declan MacManus through his sessions with the band Clover and the eventual formation of The Attractions. The release also includes a 72-page essay and a 2007 live performance. In reflections on the release, Costello discussed the creative process behind his early work and noted work, noting that he previously hesitated to share these recordings because he felt they were “too vulnerable,” though he now considers them essential to his development. He shared specific anecdotes, such as composing “(The Angels Wanna Wear My) Red Shoes” on a train while traveling to visit his mother. Costello also noted that while his music emerged during the punk era, his style was defined by a diverse array of influences—including roots, country, and pre-rock balladry—rather than a radical reset of the past. He cited Jimi Hendrix, Bob Dylan, and Frank Sinatra as significant influences on his growth and reflected on the emotional themes, such as mortality, that were present in his songwriting even at age 22.
