On 30 June 2026, Greek Olympic pole-vaulter Emmanuel Karalis was commissioned as a flag officer in the Hellenic Navy. He continued his athletic success on 25 July 2026, winning his sixth consecutive Greek national pole-vault title in Volos with a jump of 5.80 m. At the European Athletics Championships in Birmingham, Karalis secured the silver medal on 16 August 2026 by clearing 6.00 m. He finished behind Sweden’s Armand Duplantis, who set a new championship record of 6.15 m to claim his fourth consecutive European title. Duplantis noted he felt unwell due to eating Indian food the night before, describing the decision as ‘the stupidest thing I ever did’. Karalis finished ahead of France’s Baptiste Thierry, who took bronze with 5.85 m. Following the competition, Karalis stated that he ‘does not set limits for himself and is not intimidated by any height’. On 21 August 2026, Karalis competed in the Diamond League meeting in Lausanne, Switzerland. He achieved a new outdoor personal best and Greek national record of 6.16 m, surpassing his previous record of 6.08 m. However, he finished in second place behind Duplantis, who secured first place with a meeting record of 6.21 m. The competition featured a high-level duel between the two athletes, who both cleared heights of 5.51, 5.81, 5.91, and 6.01 m before Karalis failed his attempts at 6.21 and 6.26 m. Duplantis was unable to break his own world record of 6.31 m, failing in two attempts at 6.32 m. Karalis’s performance marked the highest jump ever recorded by a runner-up in a pole vault competition.
