On 30 June 2026, Greek Olympic pole-vaulter Emmanuel Karalis was commissioned as a flag officer in the Hellenic Navy. He continued his athletic success on 25 July 2026, winning his sixth consecutive Greek national pole-vault title in Volos with a jump of 5.80 m. At the European Athletics Championships in Birmingham, Karalis secured the silver medal on 16 August 2026 by clearing 6.00 m, finishing behind Sweden’s Armand Duplantis, who set a new championship record of 6.15 m. On 21 August 2026, Karalis achieved a new outdoor personal best and Greek national record of 6.16 m at the Diamond League meeting in Lausanne, Switzerland, though he finished second to Duplantis. On 26 August 2026, during the Zurich Diamond League, Karalis set another Greek national record by clearing 6.20 m, becoming only the second athlete in history to surpass that mark. Duplantis won the event by clearing 6.25 m. On 3 September 2026, at the Memorial Van Damme final in Brussels, Karalis secured his first career Diamond League title. Following the last-minute withdrawal of Duplantis due to muscle tension, Karalis cleared 6.12 m, setting a new meeting record and surpassing the previous mark of 6.11 m held by Duplantis. This victory made him the second Greek male athlete to win a Diamond League trophy. On 11 September 2026, Karalis earned a silver medal at the inaugural World Athletics Ultimate Championship in Budapest. After clearing 6.15 m on his first attempt, he was ultimately surpassed by Duplantis, who secured gold with a jump of 6.20 m. Karalis attempted a new Greek national record at 6.25 m but was unsuccessful. For his second-place finish, Karalis earned $75,000 from the event's $10 million total prize purse. Following this strong season, Karalis reached a career-high 5th place in the World Athletics rankings, rising from 7th.
