Endurance Energy underwater geothermal testing
Overview
Seattle-based startup Endurance Energy conducted a three-week demonstration of its Adélie prototype at the Axial Seamount, located approximately 300 to 480 kilometers off the coast of Oregon. The test aimed to demonstrate deep-sea drilling, well casing, and remote operation via subsea fiber-optic networks at depths of roughly 1,500 meters.
During the trial, the team drilled a subsea geothermal well that measured hydrothermal fluids at approximately 260°C, though the fluid flow was insufficient to drive the system. To overcome this, the team connected the prototype to a natural hydrothermal vent with temperatures around 281°C. This adjustment allowed the system to achieve a net positive power output for 8.7 seconds, reaching a peak net power of 16.5 kW.
Following this demonstration, Endurance Energy plans to develop an improved version of the technology, named Gentoo, with the goal of launching its first commercial project in Tonga by 2027.
