Energy Fuels mining exploration in Bahia, Brazil

Overview

Canadian company Energy Fuels, the largest uranium producer in the United States, has initiated mining exploration plans in southern Bahia, Brazil. The company holds 19 mining titles covering approximately 16,970 hectares across Nova Viçosa, Caravelas, Alcobaça, and Prado. While official filings with the National Mining Agency list titanium, ilmenite, and cassiterite, the company has informed the U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission that its primary interests are monazite and uranium.

The proposed project area encompasses ecologically sensitive zones, including the Abrolhos Marine National Park, as well as indigenous lands and traditional fishing communities. Due to concerns regarding soil and water contamination, the NGO Centro de Estudos e Conservação da Natureza has notified the Federal Public Ministry.

As mining expansion continues across Brazil, the Energy Fuels project in Bahia is noted alongside other significant mineral developments, such as phosphate fertilizer production in Minas Gerais and the Irecê Primary Ore Project in Bahia.
