Energy companies in Nigeria, including the Nigerian National Petroleum Company Limited (NNPC) and its joint ventures, are conducting medical outreach programs to provide healthcare services to underserved communities. In Edo State, a joint venture between NNPC Exploration and Production Limited (NEPL) and Seplat Energy launched the ‘Eye Can See’ programme. This three-day initiative, held in partnership with Edo Specialist Hospital, provided free eye screenings, cataract surgeries, prescription glasses, dental care, and basic health checks to thousands of residents. Separately, the ‘Vision First’ initiative—a collaboration between NNPC and Shell Nigeria Exploration and Production Company Limited (SNEPCo)—has reached over 10,000 beneficiaries since its 2022 launch. As part of the ‘Health-in-Motion’ programme, the initiative provides eyecare, cardiovascular screenings, pharmaceutical services, and insecticide-treated nets. The sixth edition of this the ‘Vision First’ outreach is currently being was recently conducted in the Badagry Local Government Area of Lagos State in collaboration with the Lagos State Ministry of Health Health, the Badagry Local Government Council, and the Kolmarg Eyesight Foundation. During this five-day initiative, medical teams treated 2,297 people. Eye care services were provided to 1,458 individuals, including 154 cataract surgeries and the distribution of 878 pairs of spectacles. The program also performed over 200 general surgeries and offered cardiovascular screenings, consultations for chronic illnesses, and laboratory services.
