The Enforcement Directorate (ED) has escalated its money laundering investigation into Cochin Minerals and Rutile Limited (CMRL) regarding alleged corporate fraud and bribery. The probe, following Serious Fraud Investigation Office (SFIO) findings, targets approximately Rs 182 crore in fictitious cash expenses spanning 15 years. A primary focus remains Exalogic Solutions Private Limited, owned by Veena Vijayan, daughter of former Kerala Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan. The ED alleges Exalogic received Rs 2.78 crore from CMRL for unrendered IT consultancy services and received Rs 50 lakh in unpaid loans from a company operated by CMRL’s Managing Director. In May, officials reportedly froze approximately Rs 18.36 crore across 242 accounts linked to Exalogic and CMRL directors. The investigation has intensified through multiple raids in Kozhikode, targeting associates of former Minister P. A. Mohammed Riyas, including a DTPC destination manager and a DYFI leader. The ED has formally requested the Kerala Police to register a First Information Report (FIR) against Pinarayi Vijayan, Veena Vijayan, and P. A. Mohammed Riyas. The case has fueled significant political tension. P. A. Mohammed Riyas has dismissed the allegations as “blatant lies” and accused the central government of using the ED as a political instrument. He has further claimed the agency attempted to coerce an associate into providing statements against his family. While the CPI has officially distanced itself from the business arrangements, stating politics and business are separate, Kerala Industrial Minister P. K. Kunhalikutty noted the Kerala state government would has stated it is seeking legal counsel to determine its next course of action, noting it will let the law take its course.
