Enforcement Directorate investigations in West Bengal
Overview
The Enforcement Directorate (ED) has initiated multiple investigations into financial irregularities and money laundering in West Bengal.
In one case involving Unity Infraprojects Ltd. (UIL), authorities provisionally attached 14.51 acres of land in Kolkata, valued at Rs 85.20 crore. This action follows a complaint by the State Bank of India alleging that UIL and its associates defrauded a consortium of 23 banks of approximately Rs 3,200 crore. Investigators claim the fraud involved fictitious transactions and the diversion of funds through shell entities.
In a separate investigation, the ED conducted raids across several locations, including Lake Town, Uttarpara, Howrah, and Durgapur, regarding a 290 crore rupee bank loan fraud. This probe centers on allegations that the Kohinoor Group diverted funds intended for a 66 MW power plant in Jharkhand for other purposes. Officials are scrutinizing financial documents to determine if the scheme was used to legitimize black money.
