Eni has announced the extension of its fuel price cap mechanism to mitigate the impact of rising oil prices on households and transport companies. The company set price thresholds at 1.99 euros per liter for gasoline and 2.25 euros per liter for diesel. Initially, the company announced the extension through the end of the year, noting that limits would be periodically reassessed based on market dynamics and logistical availability. During this period, Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni met with the Emir of Kuwait, resulting in Kuwait’s willingness to extend the price cap applied by Q8 following Italian government appeals. By late October, Eni confirmed the extension of these caps through December 31, 2026. The decision was presented alongside third-quarter financial results, which showed a 125% increase in profits. The company noted that price limits will continue to be monitored against international market quotations and the stability of its distribution network, following reports of temporary stock shortages at approximately 900 service stations. Q8 Italia has also committed to extending its price cap until the end of 2026, employing a modular approach to adapt to various operating models within its distribution network. While these initiatives aim to support consumers amidst high average prices—with self-service gasoline recently averaging 2.018 euros and diesel at 2.261 euros per liter—the consumer association Codacons has cautioned that the measure’s effectiveness depends on the caps not being increased. CEO Claudio Descalzi and CFO Francesco Gattei indicated that while thresholds are currently fixed, they remain subject to adjustment based on international market fluctuations and logistical capacity. The initiative is expected to cost approximately 700 million euros. Recent developments confirm that both Eni and Q8 will maintain these caps through December 31, 2026, to counter energy cost increases driven by Middle East geopolitical tensions and market volatility.
