Entrepreneurial funding and regulations in Germany
Overview
German entrepreneurs have access to various foundational funding options, including grants, promotional loans with favorable conditions, bank risk guarantees, and equity capital. The availability of specific programs often depends on the legal structure of the business, such as a GmbH or a sole proprietorship.
A primary instrument is the ‘Gründungszuschuss’ (startup grant) provided by the Federal Employment Agency, which is strictly limited to individuals transitioning from unemployment benefits (Arbeitslosengeld I). Applicants must apply before beginning self-employed activities.
Additionally, pregnant entrepreneurs may generally combine state startup funding with parental allowance (Elterngeld). While entrepreneurs do not possess the same maternity protection rights as employees, they are required to inform the employment agency of the start and end of maternity protection periods if they are currently receiving unemployment benefits.
