Environment and Climate Change Canada has implemented a new, targeted weather alert system to combat ‘alert fatigue’. Rolled out on August 11, the system utilizes freeform polygons to track the real-time projected paths of tornadoes and severe thunderstorms for the next 10 to 60 minutes. This approach aims to narrow alerts to areas of highest concern, ensuring residents receive notifications only when they are likely to be directly impacted. Alberta was the first province to utilize these targeted alerts. The new system allows forecasters to issue multiple, overlapping warnings within the same area to track different weather threats simultaneously. While thunderstorm and tornado warnings now use precise polygons, other alerts, such as heat or rain, will continue to use broader, predetermined zones. Weather specialists have noted that this change aligns Canada with systems used in the United States for approximately a decade, allowing warnings to be refined down to specific towns and communities. Senior meteorologist Jonathan Bau noted that the change aims to reduce ‘over-alerting fatigue’ by targeting only those downstream of an immediate threat. Weather specialist Jenny Hagan commented that the move is ‘long overdue,’ noting that the polygon system encompasses smaller, more refined areas such as specific towns or communities rather than entire regions. However, Hagan noted that mobile phone alerts may still occasionally trigger for broader areas. While the implementation seeks to increase the perceived importance of emergency alerts, some specialists have expressed concerns regarding potential information overload. Additionally, while radar upgrades have improved coverage in areas such as Saskatoon, officials have continued to work on expanding radar reach to address dead zones in northern regions.
