Environmental and climate challenges in Europe

Environmental challenges in Europe are manifesting through biodiversity loss and increased human vulnerability. Climate change, characterized by rising heat and drought, is significantly altering insect populations. In Luxembourg, biologists note that while warmer temperatures may accelerate development for some species, drought threatens those requiring moisture for egg development. In France, butterfly populations in the Grand Est region have reportedly declined by a factor of four over the last 20 years, impacting pollination and agricultural yields.

Beyond ecological shifts, climate change is exacerbating social inequalities. Research indicates that approximately 40% of Europeans lack the means to adequately cool their homes during heatwaves, with low income and poor health being primary factors. Additionally, studies have identified widespread pesticide exposure among farmers and residents near agricultural zones, with researchers detecting up to 74 different substances in single samples, including some substances previously banned in the EU.
