Communities in Anambra State are experiencing facing a multi-faceted crisis involving severe flooding, gully erosion, and rising insecurity. In Ikenga Ogidi, residents reported four deaths linked to flooding and crime, noting that poor road conditions have facilitated kidnappings and robberies. In the Uga Community, sand mining activities have reportedly caused 15 deaths and placed approximately 200 buildings at risk of collapse due to exacerbated erosion. In response to the environmental damage, Senator Victor Umeh has called on the Nigerian Federal Government to declare the Idemili North and South Local Government Areas an ‘erosion disaster zone’. Following assessments of erosion in the Obosi Community, Umeh indicated plans to petition the President and the Minister of Environment to secure federal intervention, international agency involvement, and soil stabilization efforts for affected areas including Obosi, Nkpor, Ogidi, and Umuoji. Governor Chukwuma Soludo has since declared a state of emergency regarding environmental degradation, describing erosion as the region’s “number one existential threat”. Soludo reported that over 30 per cent of the state’s total landmass has been affected, noting that approximately 98 per cent of this degradation is driven by human activities. He warned that even dedicating the entire state budget to ecological remediation would be insufficient. Addressing criticisms of infrastructure quality, the state government, through Commissioner for Works and Infrastructure Okey Ezeobi, attributed recent road damage to extreme rainfall and flash flooding. The administration cited Nigerian Meteorological Agency predictions and argued that the damage is a consequence of global climate change rather than poor construction.
