Authorities in the Aversa region of Italy have conducted several operations targeting environmental crimes and illegal waste management. In late September, an auto repair shop owner in Aversa was arrested and his business seized following an investigation by the Carabinieri Forestali. Inspectors identified unauthorized welding operations and the illegal management of hazardous waste, including oil-soaked rags, used tires, and lead-acid batteries. The investigation also revealed illegal discharges of washing water into the sewage system. In mid-October, the Carabinieri Forestale and local veterinarians expanded operations expanded to San Cipriano d’Aversa, where two buffalo farms were seized. Investigators found that livestock effluents were being illegally discharged into ditches and that animal paddocks were filled with manure. The seizure included business areas, waste, and 349 buffalo. The owners face charges regarding the illegal management and abandonment of hazardous and non-hazardous special waste, which poses a risk of soil contamination. Specifically, officials uncovered piles of hazardous waste, including contaminated pesticide packaging and motor oil, alongside exhausted batteries. Additionally, Carabinieri Forestale officers from Marcianise seized a 250-square-meter plot of state-owned land near the Aversa racecourse following reports of illegal waste burning. Authorities discovered an unauthorized structure made of wooden poles, iron sheets, and insulated panels. Two individuals were observed using heavy machinery to level the ground with construction waste, such as cement fragments, bricks, and ceramics. Investigators also found iron bins containing ashes and plastic residues from previous illegal combustions. The individuals face charges for illegal waste disposal, unauthorized construction, and the unlawful occupation of public land for profit.
