Environmental crises in South Kivu, DRC

Overview

The South Kivu region of the Democratic Republic of the Congo is experiencing concurrent environmental crises involving fire and flooding. In the Kabare territory, a fire in the Kabungo sub-village destroyed over ten homes, necessitating the demolition of three additional houses to contain the blaze. This follows previous fires in the Mudusa grouping earlier in the month.

In the Kalehe territory, heavy rains caused the Lukungula River to flood villages including Bushushu, Kabushungu, and Rambira. The flooding has damaged agricultural fields, homes, and a local health center. Local civil society groups have requested urgent humanitarian aid, including shelter, essential goods, and infrastructure rehabilitation to address damaged crossings.
