Environmental issues on Bulgaria’s Black Sea coast

Overview

In July 2026, tourists at Bulgaria’s Sunny Beach and Sveti Vlas reported dense green algae, referred to as “sea grass,” along the Black Sea coast. While some visitors expressed disappointment, others noted that such algal growth is a “normal seasonal phenomenon” in the Black Sea during the summer months.

By August, environmental issues in Sveti Vlas escalated from natural algal presence to sewage contamination. A malfunction in the automated control system at the Sveti Vlas pumping station caused untreated wastewater to bypass treatment and discharge directly into the sea. This leak, characterized by a “foul odor and yellow-brown discoloration,” led to the temporary closure of the ‘Istok’ beach area.

The Regional Inspectorate of Environment and Water (RIOSV) in Burgas issued an administrative violation against the water utility company, ViK Burgas. Local residents have also raised concerns regarding long-standing health issues and the alleged continuous failure of the local wastewater treatment plant.
