Epidermolysis bullosa care and treatment developments
Overview
Patients with epidermolysis bullosa (EB), a rare genetic condition characterized by extreme skin fragility, are experiencing both diagnostic challenges and advancements in specialized care across several regions.
In Colombia, medical specialists have noted significant barriers to early detection, including geographic and economic obstacles, as well as difficulty distinguishing EB from other skin conditions.
In contrast, specialized medical responses are being established in other areas. Paraguay’s Acosta Ñu Pediatric General Hospital has been providing comprehensive care for various EB variants since 2009. In Spain, the Andalusian health system has implemented a preventive dentistry network to mitigate oral complications and has funded access to Vyjuvek, a topical gene therapy. Reports from the Canary Islands indicate that this therapy has provided significant relief and improved quality of life for pediatric patients by healing wounds and reducing chronic pain.
