Minister of Public Works and Transportation Faiz Sucuoğlu recently inspected Ercan Airport and regional ports to address infrastructure and operational concerns. During the airport visit, discussions covered technical infrastructure, parking congestion, and the implementation of an online passport system. However, the President of the Air Traffic Controllers Union, Kürşad Hüdaverdioğlu, criticized the inspection for failing to address safety issues, specifically noting that the control tower lacks a direct view of the 29L runway head following recent construction. In response to safety concerns, the Civil Aviation Department issued a statement asserting that the airport’s Instrument Landing System (ILS) meets the technical specifications for CAT 1 approach services for runway 29L. Officials addressed claims regarding the age of air traffic control, radar, and communication systems, stating that older equipment remains safe as long as it undergoes periodic flight checks and operates within International Civil Aviation Organization (ICAO) tolerances. The department also announced upcoming plans to renew these communication and radar systems under a protocol with the State Airports Authority. Following concerns regarding flight safety, the Ministry of Public Works and Transportation issued a statement regarding the 11R/29L runway. The Ministry clarified that the runway undergoes inspections at least four times daily by the airport operator and the Civil Aviation Department, adhering to ICAO Annex 14 standards. Recent flight delays were attributed to urgent maintenance and repairs conducted after damage was identified during routine inspections. The Ministry emphasized that these delays occurred because the department is “prioritizing flight safety over operational convenience,” stating that “human life will always take precedence over commercial or operational concerns.”
