Ericsson 5G ISAC system for drone detection technology development

Swedish telecommunications company Ericsson has been testing 5G network infrastructure to identify low-flying commercial drones, including trials conducted near the Vuosaari harbor in Finland. This technology aims to enhance airspace security against hybrid threats by leveraging mobile mast infrastructure. Building on these tests, Ericsson has unveiled the Ericsson ISAC (Integrated Sensing and Communication) System. This system uses sensing-capable 5G radios, edge computing, and AI to detect and track moving objects, such as drones used in organized crime, sabotage, or armed conflicts, even when they are not connected to the network. By analyzing radio signals reflected off objects, the system can function similarly to radar to provide situational awareness. The technology is intended for use in national defense, public safety, and the protection of critical infrastructure. A commercial rollout is planned in phases, beginning with small-scale small-scale, sensing-only pilot projects with selected customers in 2027, followed by broader deployments in 2028. Future iterations involving 6G technology are expected to incorporate integrated communication functions.
