By late August 2026, negotiations for Erik Lira’s transfer from Cruz Azul to AS Monaco reached a decisive stage. While earlier discussions involved lower offers, a preliminary agreement was reached for a deal that could reach a total of 11 million euros, comprising 8 million euros in fixed fees and 3 million euros in variables and bonuses. AS Monaco was set to acquire 80 percent of Lira's federative rights, while Cruz Azul would retain a 20 percent sell-on clause. To facilitate the move to Ligue 1, Lira reportedly agreed to a salary reduction of nearly 40%, prioritizing the European project over offers from UAE club Al Jazira. A primary hurdle remained AS Monaco’s regulatory constraints regarding non-EU roster slots, which required the departure of striker Folarin Balogun to clear space for the 26-year-old midfielder. Although the transfer was briefly thought to be finalized, the move collapsed before the close of the French transfer market. The breakdown was attributed to administrative constraints in France; specifically, Monaco could not secure a non-EU player slot because the sale of Balogun to Everton failed to conclude before the deadline due to unfinalized contract terms. Following the collapse, Lira returned to training with Cruz Azul on September 4 after being granted three days of rest. Monaco manager Filipe Luís expressed strong interest in the player, describing him as a ‘TOP TOP TOP’ talent with European-level quality, and indicated intentions to pursue Lira in future windows.
