Erling Haaland trademark dispute reaches EU Court

Footballer Erling Haaland is engaged in a legal dispute with a Polish electrician regarding the trademark rights to the name ‘Haaland’. The conflict escalated to the EU Court in Luxembourg after the electrician registered the name for various products, including sportswear and energy drinks, in 2023. Although Haaland has won two previous legal proceedings, the electrician filed a new lawsuit this summer. Haaland’s legal team contends that the registration was made with ‘malicious intent’ to capitalize on the athlete’s fame. The dispute has now reached the Court of Justice of the European Union. The electrician is seeking to overturn previous decisions that stripped him of the commercial rights to the name. In his defense, the electrician claims he was unaware of the footballer’s fame at the time of registration in 2022, asserting that the name was a self-invented combination of the Polish word ‘hala’ and the English word ‘land’. Haaland’s legal team maintains the registration was made in bad faith to profit from the athlete’s global reputation.
