The Erste Bank Open tennis tournament in Vienna has seen a major shift in the ATP rankings. Alexander Zverev secured the world number one spot following a 6-4, 7-5 victory over Tallon Griekspoor in the round of 16. This win ensures Zverev will officially replace Jannik Sinner as the top-ranked player starting Monday, November 2, 2026. Zverev becomes the 30th player in ATP history to hold the top ranking and the second German man to do so, following Boris Becker in 1991. His ascent follows a season including Grand Slam titles at Roland Garros and the US Open, as well as an Australian Open semifinal appearance and a runner-up finish at the Madrid Masters 1000. ~~At 29 years and 196 days old, he is the second-oldest player to debut as world number one, following Australia’s John Newcombe.~~ Sinner’s ranking dropped following a season-ending knee injury, having held the top spot for 95 weeks. ~~Zverev claimed the position via tie-breaking criteria involving Grand Slam, ATP Finals, and mandatory Masters 1000 points.~~ In tournament play, Carlos Alcaraz has secured the Vienna Open title. He defeated Australia's Alex de Minaur in the final in straight sets, 6-1, 6-4, in approximately eighty-seven minutes. This victory marks the third-ranked player's fourth title of the season and the 28th of his career. Alcaraz completed a perfect ATP 500 season with this win, having previously secured titles in Doha and Tokyo, and achieved the championship without dropping a set throughout his five matches. Following the win, Alcaraz noted that the tournament helped him build confidence on indoor hard courts after returning from a wrist injury earlier this year. The result also impacts the race for the ATP Finals in Turin, as De Minaur's loss affects the points gap between him and Novak Djokovic.
