Esports integration and logistics in Asian Games

The Olympic Council of Asia (OCA) has addressed the status of esports within its multi-sport programming, confirming that esports will remain part of the 2026 Asian Games in Aichi-Nagoya, Japan. The program includes 11 titles, such as ‘League of Legends’ and ‘Pokémon UNITE’. To expand opportunities for athletes, the OCA also signed a contract with Kuwait to host the first Asian Esports and Mind Sports Games in 2027. Director General Husain Al Musallam noted that the new standalone event is intended to provide more platforms and will not diminish the status of esports within the Asian Games. During the 2026 Asian Games, the ‘Honor of Kings’ esports tournament concluded with Team China winning the gold medal, followed by Team Malaysia with silver, and Team Philippines and Team Hong Kong (China) sharing bronze. Jackie Huang of TiMi Studio Group stated that the inclusion of esports in the games demonstrates how gaming can “unite people across different borders, generations, and backgrounds.” Amidst the ongoing 2026 Games, the OCA has officially denied reports suggesting esports would be removed from the program, reiterating that it will maintain its status as a full medal sport. While competitive results have been notable, such as China’s dominance in women’s doubles table tennis, the event has also faced organizational challenges. Logistical errors involving vehicle assignments led to transport mistakes for several teams, including the South Korean and Pakistani men’s volleyball teams, resulting in missed training sessions.
