In early October 2026, various levels of Estonian society held ceremonies to recognize excellence in education. Local municipalities, including Põltsamaa and Türi Parishes, conducted regional events to honor educators for their long-term dedication and professional expertise. These ceremonies recognized specific achievements in kindergarten, classroom, and high school teaching, as well as individuals providing decades of service. In Otepää Parish, a recognition event was held on October 9 at Villa Müllerbeck. Otepää Parish Council Chairman Siim Kalda, Parish Mayor Jorma Riivald, and Deputy Mayor Kaija Kõiv presented letters of thanks and mementos to local teachers and national education award finalists. During the event, officials emphasized that while modern buildings and technology are important, they “cannot replace the role of teachers in shaping the future of children and the community.” In Põltsamaa Parish, a ceremony at the Põltsamaa Culture Centre on October 5 celebrated Teachers' Day by recognizing long-term service and outstanding achievements. Notable honorees included Jõgevamaa's Teacher of the Year winners: Helen Žukovits (kindergarten), Margit Tõnisson (primary school), and Margit Uus (high school). The municipality also presented awards to assistant teachers, class teachers, subject teachers, and support specialists. Following these local events, the national Estonian Teacher of the Year awards were held in Tartu. The ceremony recognized excellence across 12 categories. Heli Prii was named the 2026 Teacher of the Year for the class teacher category, while Eve Kikas received the lifetime achievement award for her scientific contributions to educational psychology. During the event, President Alar Karis and Minister of Education and Research Kristina Kallase highlighted the importance of teacher adaptability and the role of educators in fostering intellectual independence.
