Diplomatic tensions have emerged between Eswatini and the People’s Republic of China following a Chinese travel advisory urging its citizens to leave Eswatini due to “security risks,” specifically citing “rampant cyber fraud and criminal activities associated with gambling.” Eswatini officials have rejected these claims, asserting that recent law enforcement operations targeting suspected cyber-related criminal activity were conducted under due process. Acting Government Spokesperson Thabile Mdluli stated that these actions demonstrate the “vigilance and effectiveness” of the nation’s security institutions rather than a lack of stability. The government further emphasized that it will not be “coerced, disadvantaged or destabilised” regarding its sovereignty. The friction is compounded by Eswatini’s status as the only African nation maintaining formal diplomatic relations with Taiwan. This geopolitical context has led to additional allegations from Taiwan that Beijing attempted to obstruct President Lai Ching-te’s travel to the kingdom. Additionally, a group of 40 Chinese nationals is seeking E208 million in compensation from the Eswatini government, alleging they were re-arrested in violation of High Court orders while attempting to depart the country.
